Jo Yeates: reports on DNA 'perfectley preserved' BUT not backed up by police, however, DNA said to be found in forensic report.

4th Jan...

POLICE have uncovered “perfectly preserved” DNA that could catch Joanna Yeates’s killer.

They are also hunting the driver of a light-coloured 4x4 vehicle seen in the area where she was found.

The December freeze meant she was covered in snow and ice, preserving the DNA.

Joanna, 25, was missing for eight days before her strangled body was found in a country lane on Christmas Day.

One forensics expert said last night: “If they have found a perfect sample, and it’s in one piece because of the weather, then that could give the team the break they need.”

Officers investigating the death are desperate to talk to the mystery 4x4 driver, seen in the Longwood Lane area on the night Jo disappeared.

During a press conference yesterday, they refused to rule out the possibility of multiple killers.

Det Chf Insp Phil Jones, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: “We have had a number of reports of vehicles in Longwood Lane during the late Friday evening and early hours of Saturday morning, including a light-coloured 4x4 vehicle.

“This 4x4 and the other vehicles may be completely unconnected but I urge anyone in that car or any other driver in the vicinity that night to come forward.”

DCI Jones used the phrase “killers” to show he was keeping an “open mind” into the circumstances of her death.

Police say the tests have shown there was “no evidence” Jo was sexually assaulted, although there may have been a sexual motive for her murder.

The news comes as fears grew that a killer remains on the loose in the Clifton area of Bristol where Jo shared a flat with her boyfriend, Greg Reardon, 27.

And residents of Clifton admit they are frightened of going out. Chief Supt Jon Stratford said: “Women should avoid walking home alone after dark and householders should keep their premises secure and take care answering the door to strangers.

“Jo’s killer is still out there somewhere and we will find them and bring them to justice.”

Police are confident they will solve the case, although they warned that it could be a “long and complex” process.

Along with the DNA sample, officers are beginning to piece together the events of the night.

They have carried out interviews with party-goers on Canynge Road, where Jo lived, one of whom said she heard screams on the night she disappeared.

The only suspect arrested so far, Chris Jefferies, 65, was released without charge after two days in police custody.

Mr Jefferies, Jo’s landlord, shared the same block of flats.

His neighbour Paul Stanley said: “He told me he didn’t do it and I believe him. All the neighbours feel the same.”

DCI Jones added Mr Jefferies was still a suspect.

Click on to enlarge. Forensic results found DNA on Jo's body..this being reported on 4th Jan so the SUN do not have an Exclusive...unless the saliva is only now being 'leaked' but the saliva may be part of the initial report. This may also be the 'new' evidence although I think  NOT .. as it is claimed this 'new ' evidence has been found in Jo's flat.
