He added: "Jefferies just wanted to show us death. He was obsessed with it." Jefferies, 65 - who was Jo's landlord and lived in a flat above her - was arrested on Thursday.
The ex-pupil was at £28,000-a-year Clifton College in Bristol in the '80s when Jefferies taught there. The teacher earned a reputation as an oddball with his flamboyant behaviour and blue-rinse hairdo.
The student told how Jefferies had an "academic obsession" with death, and was particularly fascinated by Victorian murder novel The Moonstone and disturbing Holocaust documentary Night And Fog.
He said pupils mostly tried to avoid Jefferies - but he and his classmates were once taken to the teacher's flat. He added: "We went for a book reading. I thought it was odd we went to his flat. To go to a master's house was very, very strange, but there was nothing more to it."
Detectives yesterday interviewed a neighbour of Jo's who helped Jefferies start her boyfriend's broken-down car hours before she vanished.
Jefferies asked Peter Stanley for some jump leads to get Greg Reardon's car running so he could drive to Sheffield to see his brother. Officers spent several hours with Mr Stanley, 56, who lives next door to the flats where Jo lived in Clifton, Bristol. His BMW is being examined although he is not a suspect.
He said yesterday of the car episode: "It was a non-event at the time, but absolutely poignant now. What if we didn't get the car to start?"
Mr Stanley is thought to have previously told police that Jefferies knew Greg, 27, was leaving Jo alone at their basement flat. A tenant of Mr Stanley's was also interviewed. Graphic designer Lawrence Penny, 41, had been in France over Christmas. He described his questioning as "routine".
Jefferies has been arrested on suspicion of strangling Jo following "concerns" about his statement. But detectives are yet to find any evidence linking him to the crime.
Magistrates extended the police deadline of 7pm on Friday to release the retired English master, who taught for more than 35 years at exclusive Clifton College.
Officers are still scrutinising CCTV for clues to how Jo's body ended up in a snowy ditch in Failand, three miles from her home. It was found by dog walkers on Christmas Day
AN ex-pupil of Joanna Yeates murder suspect Chris Jefferies yesterday claimed he was obsessed with death.
The former student said eccentric English teacher Jefferies - who was released on police bail last night - made them watch films about Nazi death camps and scared some children with his macabre fascination. He added: "Jefferies just wanted to show us death. He was obsessed with it." Jefferies, 65 - who was Jo's landlord and lived in a flat above her - was arrested on Thursday.
