Joanna Yeates' murder linked to unsolved murder of Glenis Carruthers?

Although the murder of Glenis Carruthers was 37 years ago, her parents believe there are similarities between their daughter’s murder and that of Joanna. Having looked at the details it’s easy to see why they’ve reached that conclusion.

Both Glenis and Joanna had been strangled, their bodies fully clothed and neither had been sexually assaulted.

The
Daily Mail  explains more:
“Both women were found without shoes, neither were sexually assaulted and they were attacked at the same time of night.”
I can understand Joanna being without footwear if her murder took place at home, but Glenis had attended a 21st birthday party at Clifton (not far from where Joanna and her boyfriend lived) and stepped outside for a walk or so we’re led to believe, having read the article I suspect she may have left the party unseen with someone else she met there, but that’s only speculation on my part. So why would Glenis be missing her shoes? There doesn’t seem to be any explanation as yet.

The Daily Mail goes on to explain that neither Joanna nor Glenis seemed to have struggled.

The zoo keeper
who had seen Glenis with her murderer gives us some insight with his account:
A senior overseer of the big cats, reptiles and camels at the zoo,.50-year-old Alf Elliott, who lived nearby in Northcote Road, said that he had spotted someone who fitted Glenis's description while he was out exercising his dogs.

He passed what he thought was a courting couple but when he passed them again the man got up and walked away, leaving the woman in the grass. 'I shouted to him 'Hey, what's your game?'

He didn't reply and I repeated what I had just said.

He just stared and went on. his way,' the zoo keeper said. 'I called the police straight away. I could not see the man very well as it was quite dark and a mass of hair hid his face.'”

A courting couple implies that he was perhaps laid on Glenis. But before I go further into this, let’s take a look at what the pathologist reported:
The lack of serious injury to the dead girl surprised both the Ham Green hospital pathologist Derek Johnson and Mr Lewis.
He said, 'The lack of a struggle, lack of injury, lack of anything to go on hampered our inquiries.
One almost felt that it was a mistake thinking this was a murder case.' The pathologist could only find a small abrasion on the throat. It seemed like an indecent assault from behind with a hand to the throat.”
Lack of struggle, lack of injury and it seemed like an indecent assault from behind with a hand to the throat...this all springs to mind a martial art move, the “sleeper hold.”
"Now let's look closely at the application of the sleeper hold.  The carotid arteries run along the sides of the neck.  They are located straight down from the ear at about the level of the Adam's apple.  These are the arteries you want to constrict.  Once pressure is applied, it will be only a matter of seconds before your opponent is rendered unconscious.
I recommend executing this technique from the rear.  When you are in front of a person, it is more difficult to apply pressure, and you may have difficulty avoiding his hands and feet."
It would seem, given the available evidence and reports, that Glenis (and perhaps Joanna) were rendered unconscious with the ‘Sleeper Hold’ before being strangled. This would explain why the zoo keeper initially thinking he’d come across a ‘courting couple’ – after Glenis’ unconscious body slipped to the ground, perhaps her assailant laid on her chest to keep the pressure on her lungs while he strangled her?The Avon and Somerset Police site gives a description of Glenis’ murderer:
“The witness described the man as white, between 20 to 25 years old; around 5ft 10inches tall in height, medium build, with brown shoulder length hair. He was wearing a three-quarter length coat and a denim type cap.”
By the way, the 21st birthday party that Glenis attended was for her friend Sandra Hardyman.  Ironically, according to the Telegraph, Geoffrey Hardyman (who lives above Joanna) is related to Sandra – albeit a distant cousin.

The Telegraph also explains that Geoffrey Hardyman (78yrs old) and Joanna's landlord Chris Jefferies (65yrs old) have been friends for over 40 years.

Although the murders of Glenis and Joanna are 37 years apart, it’s eerie how they seem so alike...lack of struggle; fully clothed; no sexual assault; strangulation.

To Add from comments section:
Geoffrey V Hardyman was born in 1932 in Antananarivo, Madagascar, son of Arnold and Laura Hardyman. V probably stands for Victor, his father's middle name.
