Armed police rescued a Chinese woman who was being held hostage inside a semi-detached house in a quiet residential Bristol street.

They raided the house in Oldbury Court Road, Fishponds, shortly after lunchtime yesterday.
They smashed their way into the home using a battering ram and rescued the woman in her 20s who had been missing for several days.

Three men in their 20s were arrested on suspicion of kidnapping.

A police spokeswoman said: "They are currently in police custody helping officers with their inquiries. The woman is safe and well."

Next-door neighbour Sam Bawn was watching football on television with his partner and six-month-old baby Taylan when they heard loud banging as though someone was trying to break into the house.

Mr Bawn, 25, a supermarket security guard, said: "I looked out of the front window and saw a policeman with an assault rifle and I thought, 'Blimey, I wonder what's going on?'
"It sounds crazy, but I was worried they might start shooting at us so we dived into the back room for safety."

His partner, Jodi Dowse, 22, said: "I was just going to have a nap when all the noise started.
"It all sounds so silly now, but there was no way I was going to let anyone get their hands on our baby."

Mr Bawn said he saw from his kitchen window a man trying to escape from the house next door.

Ms Dowse said they had heard screaming and banging coming from the house on Friday night.

Another neighbour, Aman Ullah, 48, who works as a cleaner and is married with four children, said a Chinese woman and two young children had lived in the house for about two months. He said when they heard so much noise outside, they called the police – but in fact it was the noise of the police officers breaking into the house next door.

One trader in a rank of shops at the end of the street, who asked not to be named, said a lot of Chinese women were known to come and go from a rented house in Oldbury Court Road.
Police Superintendent Steve Jefferies said: "This was a very sensitive operation but one which has come to a highly successful conclusion.

"Officers responded appropriately to what could have potentially been a very difficult situation.

"The safety of everyone involved was our primary concern.

"Firstly the woman concerned but also the wider community and our own officers.
.."We have three people in custody helping us with our inquiries and the woman is being looked after by officers and is in touch with her family in China."

● Armed police officers in two Range Rovers also stopped a Y-registered grey Vauxhall hatchback near Lodge Causeway at about the time of the hostage rescue yesterday afternoon.
